Fall is my most favorite season. It is an opportunity to play with multiple textures and fabrics due to the necessity for more for your wear.
This season (Fall 2015) is flawlessly embracing the use of fur, leathers and hints of glam in accessory layers like jackets and jewelry.
I recently went on a hunt to find statement pieces to help me stand out while fitting in on the trends this season.
The Rose Bowl Flea in Pasadena, Ca (or find your local market) is a great place to find items that will satisfy this seasons' fashion requirements, accommodating the weather and rounding out the year-end festivities with style.
My trend focus was #fur (faux) and #leather (real) and, with success, I scored two great pieces; a vintage 70's style fur trim coat, as well as, a fab 80's style forest green leather dress (pictured below).
To be clear, 70’s fur was more patchwork in style featuring leather insets, mixing of materials, and prints (animal) but the fur accent was all in the collar. Whereas 80’s was bigger, like everything in the 80’s - LOTS of shoulder structure and full-body fur. Think Joan Collins in Dynasty...
The coat designer unknown but a real gem with the dress! If you're not familiar and are looking for fashion industry street cred you should get familiar with Bill Morgan, craftsman leather master to the stars of the 60's and 70's. Mr. Morgan started custom designing and handmaking styles worn by some of fashions’ most stylish icons from Jackie O. to Jimi Hendrix and recently revived his brand/store North Beach Leathers.
Another great way to make a statement is with jewelry, however it can be both expensive and delicate, (most literally) to find the right balance between cost and wear. I love to accessorize with costume jewelry, layered and loud. Oversized jewelry at an under priced buy will dress up-or down-any look and luckily, it’s all the rave of the runways, too.
But, before you go here are some tips to prep your pump at the Flea.
Two ways to roll: NO BULL or LATE STROLL:
Rise and shine! As we all know, early bird gets the...best. First of the am leaves an ambitious impression but don’t take NO. Bargain for your best, you know what it’s worth.
However, last call can get you a lazy save; not wanting to pack it all up, you’ll sometimes find the gems a vendor is willing to leave behind for the right price.
HANDS CLEAN: Sanitary wipes and gel, it’s a dirty world out there in the land of second hand.
IN HAND: Cash. But only your allotted budget and SMALL bills... or pay the big bucks.
ON HAND: Your LIST. Stay focused. I can’t repeat this enough- STAY FOCUSED. Know what styles you are looking.
ON HEAD: Hat, Sunnies and Screen.
IN HEAD: Do your R+D for the real deal. Know the brands you are looking for so you know when, and what to pay the price for.
Think on it.
My best tip is to wait, then circle back. I keep my eye on things I want and price compare. Do a bit of bargaining and or take names (of labels and vendors); if I can’t leave or sleep without it, go back to buy or get in touch for a later day purchase and pick up.
Either way, to flea is to have fun! Tis the season to celebrate our savings with a bargain- the gift that keeps giving!
